Banana Thread Trick

Kum Ba Ya
Banana Slice Trick

It was always fun to go up to Grandma and Poppaw's house in the Virginia mountains. Most of the relatives lived around there, and something was always going on.

Even after six years and lots of hard work on a farm, Grandma always had the energy to have some fun. She could get the old pans out of the cabinet and make music kind of like the ham-bone some people do.

One of Grandma's cool games was to slice a banana in the peeling. I'd start peeling down the sides, and the banana would already be cut in slices. I was amazed and begged Grandma to teach me the banana trick.

So, she did . . .

You need a piece of sewing thread. It should be long enough so that you can hold it tight on each end with your hands with a little space in the middle the width of the banana.

Lay the banana down. Then, take the thread and slide is quick and smooth and make slices in the banana. You can kind of see your marks to start with, but the peeling closes back up so that it's not obvious that the peeling has been cut too.

Put the sliced banana in the bowl of give it to someone to eat - pretty quick since the peeling has actually been cut. That might show up later. I don't know. I never could keep it secret long enough to find out.

Kids think this is really fun. Hey, some adults do too. So, the next time you have some bananas, try Grandma's banana trick. You might want to practice a couple of times first. It takes a little coordination especially for kids.
