Not Just the Family Dishwasher Now
It is possible to learn to cook and to be good at it!

My brothers were both great cooks. They learned in Boy Scouts, although I know they expanded beyond scrambled eggs, Dutch Oven cake, and S’mores.

Can You Burn Pop Tarts? Yes.

I could burn pop tarts. No kidding. I put them in the toaster (simple enough) and wandered off to watch cartoons in the other room. One of my brothers noted that it smelled like something was burning. Yep. The corner of the Pop Tart caught and sat there long enough that the pastry was on fire.

For obvious reasons, I became the family dishwasher. After all, there’s no fire involved with washing the dishes. And, it saved on the food bill.

The Fudge that Never Did Boil

I did get a wild hair once and thought I’d make fudge for a high school sweetheart. I took the recipe to the store to get the ingredients. I need a can of evaporated milk. After asking directions to the section for canned milk, I thought I’d buy the expensive canned milk – condensed milk. After all, I wanted that fudge to be extra special and impressive.

Back at home, I put my ingredients in a pot to boil. I had a big ball that looked like Play Dough. Hum . . .

My brother asked me what I was doing, and I told him I was waiting on the fudge to boil.

“If that boils, you come get me. I want to see that,” said my brother.

He then checked the recipe and explained the difference between evaporated and condensed milk. In case you don’t know, evaporated milk is thin like milk in the carton. Condensed milk is very thick and rich. They are both good for cooking, but you sure can substitute one for the other as I found out.

But, There is Hope . . . and . . . Yes You Can Cook

If you’ve had kitchen mishaps, do not give up. I’m now one of the best cooks around, although my brothers remember and still tease me about the sad things I managed to do to food back in the day. Oh well. It makes it all the sweeter that can now put a good meal on the table and that folks look for my dishes at pot luck dinners.
